Flagyl is a widely used antibiotic that is employed in the bacterial or amoebic infections of stomach, skin, vagina and respiratory tract such as Trichomoniasis and Amoebiasis. Flagyl contains Metronidazole as the active constituent.

Mechanism of action of Flagyl:

Flagyl (Metronidazole) belongs to the nitroimidazole class of drug works by inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis by disrupting the DNA in the microbial cells. This kills the bacteria preventing the further infection in the body.

The dosing regimen of Flagyl:

Flagyl is available in different strength as tablet dosage form. The dose of this medication depends upon the condition of the patient. For the treatment of Trichomoniasis, the normally used dose is 2 gm (one day course) Flagyl is given in single dose per day, or two doses of 1 gm each are given in a day. The dose used seven-day course is 250 mg of Flagyl is given 3 times a day for 7 consecutive days. For the treatment of Amoebiasis normally used dose is 500- 750 mg of Flagyl is given orally for 5- 10 days. Anaerobic bacterial infections: In bacterial infections, the recommended adult dose taken is 500 mg/ day. The maximum dose of Flagyl should not exceed 4 g/day.

Contraindications of Flagyl

  • Do not take Flagyl if you are allergic to Metronidazole or any other ingredient present in the medication.
  • Anemic patients or person suffering from leukopenia should not take  Flagyl.
  • If any stomach or intestinal disease persists than taking Flagyl is not advisable.
  • Epileptic patients or person suffering from nerve disorders should not take Flagyl.

Side effects of Flagyl:

Commonly seen side effects with the use Flagyl are light-headedness, dizziness, heat burn, trouble sleeping and weight loss.

Drug interactions of Flagyl:

  • Do not use Alcohol containing medications such as cough syrups along with this medication to avoid unwanted effects.
  • Do not use Disulfiram.
  • Antibiotics such as Rifampin and Rifabutin can decrease the effectiveness of Flagyl, therefore, do not use along with Flagyl.
  • Do not take any other anti-diarrhea medication along with Flagyl.

Safety measures to be taken while using  Flagyl:

  • Do not take alcohol; with or after taking Flagyl for at least 3 days.
  • Consult the doctor in case of pregnancy and lactation.

Storage conditions:

Store in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children and pets.
